The painted lady butterfly travels from Europe to Africa and back again, covering 12000 km. Each generation flies only part of the journey, following the path begun by their ancestors. Without any hope of reaching their final destination, they set out on their journey regardless. Their quest is in the becoming, rather than the arriving.

When I was about twelve, I was in a fishing boat off the coast of Durban when all of a sudden, we were surrounded by a school of manta rays. It was magical, otherworldly. Nothing about them - their form, the way they moved, their size - was familiar. How did I recognise that they were creatures that felt and breathed just as I did? Because these creatures surely possessed a sentience far beyond my own. For the few minutes that their school dwarfed our boat, their immersion in a reality far bigger than anything I had previously known was as clear as the sparks of light dancing on their wingtips.
It was only in 2016 that marine biologists confirmed that along with elephants and chimpanzees, manta rays display the distinctly human traits of self-awareness and self-recognition. Many years before, my legs had slipped beneath me as I clutched the rail in awe. The heightened level of consciousness of these magnificent creatures was almost palpable.
