When the original artwork is complete, it enters the moulding department. Synthetic clay is used to build retaining walls around the sculpture to create a rubber silicon mould. The rubber is in the form of a liquid until a catalyst is added. This catalyst causes the silicon to set into a solid form. Fibre glass resin is further added to increase the strength of the mould. When this mould is released, it reveals the reverse imprint of the sculpture. This space is filled with wax to create a sacrificial wax copy. Learn more about the next step in the process here.
