Copper, manganese, and silica are mixed in a crucible and heated to over one thousand degrees to create bronze. Using tongs and pouring rings, this crucible is carefully lifted out of the furnace and used to fill the waiting ceramic moulds. The molten bronze quickly cools as it flows through the hollow form of the sculpture. This is the moment of truth, when weeks of labour could solidify into an incredible artwork, or could be lost in an instant, putting the foundry back at the starting point. Amidst tremendous heat, the team moves in silence and as one body, their familiarity with each other and the process guiding them to success.
Hours later, when the furnace and moulds have fully cooled, the ceramic shell is broken off with hammers, chisels, and sandblasting. Once the sculpture has been put back together, and any lost details repaired, it is patinated to control the oxidization process and give it the perfect colour. |
