Your creative journey starts here...
|
Welcome! We're so happy you're here. Send us an email to let us know you've started the course, and we'll send you a link to join our private online sculpting community.
Your sculpting kit comes with two blocks of sculpting wax and two sculpting tools. The first step is to soften your wax until it's pliable and ready to model with. Leaving it in a sunny spot is a good way to start. The new step is to play around with your tools. Don't feel limited to those supplied. Anything can be a tool: toothpick, butter knife, porcupine quill... When your sculpture is complete, wrap it carefully in the bubble wrap provided, and put it back into the Alchemy of Bronze box. Place this inside the provided flyer bag and drop us an email. We'll send you the waybill, which you can print out and add to the flyer bag. The Courier Guy will collect your parcel, and bring it to us for casting. Keep in touch with the casting process on the sculpting community. When it's ready, we'll ship it back to you. |
Going deeper...
The first step in any process of transformation is working out what it is you actually want to do. So we start by dreaming. Dream up your creation. Will it be a talisman? A fantasy creature crawled up out of your imagination? A faithful depiction of a beloved companion?
Whatever it is you seek to shape into being, spend some time gathering reference. This could take the form of sketches. A collection of images will likely be helpful. Remember your sculpture will be 3D, so collect up different perspectives and angles. You might want to gather up different textures and tools. Consider scale as well. To fit the parameters of this course, you must use only the wax provided. Will you use it all at once? Or will you create a basic form and add detail later? Creation of an artwork requires material considerations as well as spiritual. Your dream should be achievable within your current framework.
Next, clear a special place for your project. Place your Alchemy of Bronze sculpting kit somewhere you can see it and that can handle a little mess. When the space for creativity is ready and waiting, we begin to open ourselves up to it. Add a little to your creative space every day. A sheaf of paper for sketching. A carefully-sharpened pencil. A leaf you picked up on your morning walk. Create the space for something new, in your home and in your heart.
It’s time to dream.

With dreams in hand...
The act of creation is a kind of magic. Creating something where before there was nothing empowers and transforms. But the process takes faith. It’s easy to look at others who are already at their destination and think their path was easy, simple, obvious. We see only the results. But as with most journeys, the process unfolds in stages, and the end is rarely clear until we arrive.
So travel light as you go. Don’t take yourself or this project too seriously. The point is to keep going. Keep playing. Some might say, ‘Keep working at it”. But we're going to emphasize the curious aspect of it. Remember there’s no way to win at this. There’s no right way. While it’s possible to learn techniques or receive tips about working in this or that medium, art can’t be explained or taught. Articulating what is inexpressible detracts from the spontaneity of creation, transforming creativity into mere method. No one will express what you want to express in a way that is inherently you. At the scale of your current project, there is very little that can go wrong. Open yourself up, keep looking back at your reference, and keep playing. Don’t stop at the first draft. Put it down, somewhere you can see it and come back to it. Glance at it out of the side of your vision. Consider it from different angles over several days. The answers are there, as long as you keep looking for them.
