We'd love to chat about creating a bespoke piece customized for your space.
Contact Seth on +27606217349 or email Claire at [email protected] to start the process. We do hold a limited amount of stock of the artworks in our portfolio, but most sculptures are handmade to order, according to the pictured design. Please expect a time to delivery of five to eight weeks. |
The artists
The brand Falconer Art Studios is a collaboration between artists Claire Falconer and Seth Falconer. Partners in work, life, and art, they founded The Falconer Foundry in 2013, and continue to offer a customized high-quality casting service to a talented range of sculptors. Their own artwork, growing alongside the foundry business, is influenced by the simplicity and abundance of nature, and is driven by innovation in process and design. They work to distill the elements into form, texture, color, line, and sound.

the process
The process of casting bronze is an art form in itself, with a history in human civilization stretching back millenia. The so-called ‘lost wax’ technique builds up a ceramic shell around the original wax form through successive layers of sand and binders. This original is later melted out, leaving no trace but a reverse imprint on a hollow ceramic form. Molten metal, heated up to over a thousand degrees, is then poured into this space, cooling into an artwork that will stand the test of centuries.

The Team
Lost-wax casting is a hands-on affair. The technique requires creativity, intuition, and high attention to detail. Consequently, our people are our greatest asset. Smangele Shabalala is our master wax-maker. Nicholas Ndlela is our ceramic expert and head of the metal workshop. Mzo Mchunu is also a metalworker and manages our mould-making department. Duduzile Gumede keeps everything running smoothly by assisting in the kitchen and caring for the youngest members of the team - Emma Falconer, Peter Falconer, and Philasande Shabalala.
