The Vula Collection is a series of door pulls and knobs made by artists in South Africa. The collection celebrates the African spiritual tradition of ephonsa amathambo. In a bone-throwing ritual, a sangoma or shaman scatters bones to read signs from the spirits. The shaman is led to each object in his or her personal collection of bones by the ancestors. There is a felt connection. Some objects give substance to the divination reading; others add nuance. Artists of The Vula Collection draws on the poetry of found objects and their long history in African mysticism. The symbolism of Vula sculptures form a connection between realms spiritual and material just as doors connect us between physical spaces.
